Personal Statement & UCAS Application Support

Nicole Taylor - BA (Hons) Cantab (University of Cambridge)

Hi, I’m Nicole Taylor — a Cambridge Mathematics graduate and specialist UCAS and personal statement tutor. I work with students applying to competitive universities, helping them present their academic achievements, interests, and ambitions clearly and convincingly in their applications.

Since 2019, I have supported hundreds of students across the UK and internationally with their university applications. Many of the students I work with have gone on to receive offers from Oxford, Cambridge, Imperial, Warwick, and other leading universities.

My approach is strategic, supportive, and tailored to each student. The goal is not simply to edit a statement, but to help students develop a clear narrative about their academic interests and motivations. During our work together, I help students:

  • Develop a strong and coherent personal statement that reflects their genuine interest in the subject

  • Improve the structure, clarity, and overall impact of their writing

  • Avoid common mistakes that can weaken otherwise strong applications

  • Make informed decisions about course and university choices

  • Prepare confidently for the later stages of the admissions process, including admissions tests and interviews

Personalised UCAS Application Support

I provide structured guidance for students who want to submit a strong and carefully developed university application. My focus is on helping students articulate their academic interests clearly, demonstrate genuine engagement with their subject, and ensure their personal statement reflects both their achievements and their potential.

Over the past six years, I have worked extensively with students applying to highly competitive courses, particularly in mathematics and other quantitative subjects. All support is delivered through focused one-to-one online sessions, allowing students anywhere in the world to receive personalised guidance throughout the application process.

UCAS Personal Statement Support

Developing A Strong Personal Statement

Writing a strong personal statement is one of the most important parts of a university application, yet many students find it difficult to know where to begin. This is especially true when applying to highly competitive universities such as Cambridge or Oxford, where admissions tutors are looking for evidence of genuine intellectual curiosity, independent learning, and clear academic motivation.

Through my experience supporting students through the UCAS process, I help applicants develop a statement that communicates their interest in the subject in a thoughtful and structured way. The goal is not simply to produce polished writing, but to shape a statement that demonstrates academic engagement and reflects the qualities universities value most in successful applicants. Rather than simply listing activities, we focus on explaining what you have learned from these experiences and how they have shaped your interest in the subject. This helps your personal statement show genuine intellectual engagement, which is something admissions tutors place significant value on when reviewing applications.

What We Work On Together

During the process, we identify the most relevant aspects of your academic journey — including extra and ‘super’-curriculars, independent exploration of the subject, competitions you may have taken part in, projects, or other academic experiences — and develop these into clear, well-structured paragraphs that strengthen your application.

Support throughout the process can include:

  • Generating ideas and identifying strong academic content

  • Structuring the personal statement so that it reads clearly and logically

  • Improving clarity, tone, and expression while maintaining your own voice

  • Refining drafts to improve flow, coherence, and overall impact

  • Ensuring the statement is focused on subject interest rather than unnecessary detail

  • Carefully reviewing the final draft to ensure it is concise, polished, and ready for submission through UCAS.

Support For International Students

For international students, the UCAS process can often feel unfamiliar. I regularly work with applicants from outside the UK and can help ensure that the language, tone, and structure of the statement read naturally and professionally in English, while still reflecting the student’s own voice and ideas.

About Online Tuition

A question I am often asked about online tuition is whether it is the right option for a student’s circumstances. To help answer this, I’ve written a short article below explaining the benefits of online tutoring and how it works in practice.
